Synopsis

In Turning Worlds, three films made between 1964 and 1979 are a rare capsule of a formative era of decolonisation, socialist internationalism, and cultural exchange. Emerging from a newly independent Sudan, Suliman Elnour and Ibrahim Shaddad were among a generation of leftist artists and intellectuals who entered expanding networks linking Africa and the Arab world with socialist Europe and the wider Global South.

Moving between Moscow, East Germany, South Yemen, and imagined ideas of Africa, Elnour and Shaddad explore education, anti-colonial solidarity, racism, and the promise of social transformation.

Turning Worlds screen talk will be based on an essay writtern in reflection of the films, commissioned by English PEN.

Programme:

- It Still Rotates (Suliman Elnour, 1978, 19mins)

- Africa, the Jungle, Drums and Revolution (Suliman Elnour, 1979, 11mins)

- Hunting Party (Jagdpartie) (Imbrahim Shaddad, 1964, 41mins)
