SynopsisIn 17th Spain, everyone expected the Inquisition. Set in the harsh world of the Catholic witch-hunts, the young bride Kattalin (Yune Nogueiras) escapes from her violent new husband with a little help from a poisonous mushroom. Shrouded by the night and the woods, she stumbles upon three old women, gossiping and sharing horror stories. Unfolding in a series of horror vignettes, Gaua (‘the night’ in the Basque language), sees writer-director Paul Urkijo Alijo weave a tale of corruption, sexual liberation, and classic storytelling into a folk feminist parable that culminates in a feverish finale.
